Artist Bio

I am a self-taught photographer, working in this medium for 27 years. I tend to be traditional in my approach, using minimal equipment and working only with available light, shooting a wide variety of subjects in both color and black and white. Presently, I have been focusing primarily on night photography.

A native of the Boston area with a blue-collar background, I have lived in numerous parts of the United States, worked in a variety of factory settings, and consistently had a passionate love of the road. I presently reside in Seattle with my wife and daughters.

Trips with no set destinations, rural and urban, provide me with inspiration as well as material. Interest and experience in filmmaking has also tempered my photography by changing the way in which I perceive the language of the frame. This has to do with questions of balance and creating moods -- ensuring that people seeing my photographs have an experience in accord with my artistic vision. One of the compelling challenges of photography is translating three dimensions into two dimensions within a rectangle -- and then taking the viewer through that form back into a three dimensional world.
